To celebrate the 10th anniversary of his bold and daring fashion brand, David Tlale will work with Vlisco to create a limited edition collection. Entitled: “A Celebration of Heritage” the collection was launched on October 30, 2013 at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week AFRICA in South Africa.
As a tribute to the continent that nurtured him, Tlale will pay homage to Mother Africa with this African inspired collection. For David, Vlisco was the obvious partner because its fabrics are synonymous with authentic Dutch design embodying African pride.
“What I love about Vlisco is that it is an international brand from the Netherlands, with deep roots in the West and Central African fashion world and truly beloved of African women. Combined with our aesthetic and our South African story, it makes a killer combination,” says David Tlale.
Tlale used original, limited edition, Vlisco fabrics embellished with gold designs for his unique, ready-to-wear collection, which will be available from his store at the Michelangelo Towers in Sandton after the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa.
“The fabrics I chose have a name and a deeper meaning for women in West and Central Africa. Reinterpreting this design into luxury fashion is the perfect way to celebrate my heritage and the growth of my brand,” adds Tlale.
Roger Gerards, Creative Director of Vlisco, expressed his delight in teaming up with Tlale:
“We love his, outspoken, feminine fashion. Both Vlisco and David Tlale are international brands with strong ties to South Africa: Tlale manufactures his clothes in South Africa, helping to develop the fashion market there. For Vlisco, South Africa is exciting as it is really becoming a design-minded country.
Tlale’s brand defies convention and compromise, yet displays an unpredictable use and understanding of craftsmanship, fabric, colour and texture. Since his debut in 2003, Tlale has won numerous awards and his brand has become iconic in South Africa.
Vlisco, a story as unique as its products. Vlisco’s heritage is quite unlike any other. Since 1846, they have created unique designs and textiles, influencing the fashion landscape in West and Central Africa. Their fabrics reflect true Dutch craftsmanship and they are still the only brand creating authentic Dutch Wax fabrics, recognisable for the unique design, colours and wax craquelé.
Today, Vlisco is an international brand with not only a rich heritage, but also many heart-warming stories to tell. Stories of family history, passed down from generation to generation, and of fabrics that have a deeper meaning and that have been honoured by consumers and traders with names of endearment. The story is never ending.
