Is Nigeria’s Fastest Man, Obinna Metu, Set For the Olympics?

100 meters three-time champion Obinna Metu has reclaimed the title from Ogho Oghene Egwero during the 100 meters event at the ongoing All Nigeria/Cross River Athletics Championships in Calabar. Metu finished the hotly contested race in 10.11 seconds to Egwero’s 10.19.
Having been in the country’s Olympic camp at Atlanta in the United States of America, the sprinter says: “I am happy I have proved here that changing one’s training regime and coach can sometimes be beneficial”.
According to the Team Nigeria’s coach, Innocent Egbunike the sprinter had claimed that “…he was coming here to show a few of the new tricks he learnt at the Olympic camp… I am happy that some of the athletes from that camp have shown that it was not all a waste of effort”.
With the heavy criticisms always trailing our Athletics Federation’s attitude to preparations for the Olympics – usually preparing for less than a year for the same competitions that their counterparts from other countries spend years preparing for – it is left for this set of Nigerian athletes to prove the critics wrong by winning plenty gold medals in this year’s Olympics. Metu will have the like of Ussain Bolt and Asafa Powell to compete with.
