PDP sweeps Akwa Ibom council polls

It was sweet victory for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State at the weekend as its candidates won the polls in the 31 local councils.

The state’s Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC’s) Chairman, Gloria Ukpong, who released the result of the elections, said the PDP won all the 31 council.

Presenting the results to journalists in her office, she disclosed that the commission had received protests from some contestants and communities over alleged irregularities in the exercise.
Ukpong advised them to approach the electoral tribunal when it is set up for redress.

The PDP won all the chairmanship seats while the ACN got one councillorship slot in the 10 wards in Ikono council and another one in Mbo council.

The United Nigeria People’s Party (UNPP) won one councillor seat in Esit Eket council and the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) clinched one seat in Ukanafun council. All the other seats were won by the PDP.

According Ukpong, the election was peaceful through out the state and thanked the electorate, stakeholders and security operatives for their support.

She said the details of the results would be released today.

Meanwhile, the immediate past National Acting Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, has described the planned alliance of the leadership of the ACN and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) as “mere wishful thinking.”

He said Nigerians would not be deceived by the leadership of the two opposition parties, who teaming up for selfish interest.

Reacting to the alleged “gang up” of the ACN and CPC to dislodge the PDP in 2015, Baraje in a statement he issued in Ilorin, Kwara State, said: “How can Nigerians have trust in someone that lost presidential election bid several times and even said openly at a stage that he was no longer interested in contesting election and again showing interest in the race.”

Baraje said President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration would not be distracted from the serious business of developing the country, asserting that the PDP consisted of trusted, responsible and respected Nigerians, who were after the unity of the country.
