Sophie Okonedo, Omotola, others take on Shell



A mounting campaign against oil giant, Shell, over its activities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria has been receiving attention and participation from celebrities around the world, lately including British-Nigerian actress, Sophie Okonedo.
The actress, notable for roles in such Hollywood movies like ‘Hotel Rwanda’ with Don Cheadle and ‘Aeon Flux’, among others, is lending her voice in a global petition to Shell’s Chief Executive, Peter Voser, asking for an initial $1B investment to kick start the clean up of the heavily polluted area.

The petition, originated by the human rights group, Amnesty International, wants to get 20,000 signatures from the UK to help compel the management of the oil company take action and clean up the environmental mess made in the oil rich region.
She is joined by a growing list of petitioners from all over the world, including Nigerian star actress, Omtotala Jalade Ekeinde.
